Guangzhou Immigrant Visa Interview Trip: U.S. Consulate Logistics, Medical, and Passport Return
How to plan the trip to the U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou: the two things you have to finish before interview day, what to bring, and how your passport gets back to you.
Summary
Your interview is at the U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou, 43 Huajiu Road, Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe District, the only U.S. post in mainland China that issues immigrant visas. Interviews are Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. Two things must happen first: register online and choose how your passport comes back (CITIC Bank pickup or home delivery), and complete the medical exam at an approved panel physician (in the south, the Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center, RMB 1,700 for age 15 and up). On the day, leave all electronics behind (there are no lockers), bring notarized originals in checklist order, and expect a short interview, mostly in Mandarin. After approval your passport comes back through your chosen CITIC branch or by delivery, usually within one to two weeks.

| Before the interview | Register online with the authorized visa application service (usvisascheduling.com) and choose how your passport comes back, then complete the medical exam at an approved panel physician (in the south, the Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center). Both must be done before interview day. |
| Medical exam fee | RMB 1,700 for age 15 and above at the Guangzhou center (RMB 1,500 ages 2–14, RMB 700 under 2), paid directly to the clinic, as of May 2026. X-ray, blood test, and any vaccinations are included or added on site. |
| Security | No mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, USB drives, large bags, food, or liquids. There are no storage lockers at the consulate. Only people named on the appointment letter may enter, so petitioners and attorneys cannot wait inside. |
| Passport return | The consulate keeps your passport, prints the visa, and returns it through the CITIC Bank branch you chose at registration (pick it up in person with a photo ID) or by premium delivery to your home address, usually within one to two weeks. A CITIC branch holds the passport for 15 days before sending it back to the consulate. |

The trip, step by step
You do not book the interview yourself: the National Visa Center assigns your Tuesday date once your case is documentarily qualified. Once you have a date, this is the order to work in. Two of these steps happen before you ever reach the consulate gate, and getting them done early is what keeps interview day smooth.
Step 1: Confirm the appointment and choose how your passport comes back
The National Visa Center assigns your Tuesday interview date once your case is documentarily qualified; you do not pick it. As soon as you have a date, register online with the authorized visa application service (usvisascheduling.com). During registration you choose your passport-return method: pickup at a specific CITIC Bank branch, or premium delivery to a home address. Print the online registration confirmation page; you bring it to the interview.
Step 2: Book and complete the medical exam before interview day
You cannot book the medical until an interview is scheduled, and the result must reach the consulate before your Tuesday slot, so call the panel physician the moment you have a date. In the south that is the Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center (4/F–5/F East Tower, Poly Building, No. 59 Huali Road, Zhujiang New Town; tel 020-81219500). Bring your passport, the interview letter, five visa photos, and your vaccination records. The basic fee is RMB 1,700 for age 15 and up, paid to the clinic. If you receive a sealed envelope, do not open it; if your exam uses the e-medical process you will not get an envelope.
Step 3: Assemble notarized originals in checklist order
China-issued civil documents (birth, marriage, divorce, police) must be issued and translated into English by a local notary public office, then brought as originals. Stack them in the order on the consulate checklist: passport (valid 8 months past issuance) plus any old passports, two 2x2-inch white-background photos under six months old, the DS-260 confirmation page, notarial birth certificate, the police certificate for everyone 16 and older issued within the last 24 months, marriage and any prior-divorce certificates, the I-864 Affidavit of Support with the petitioner's IRS tax transcript and proof of U.S. status, relationship evidence, and the sealed medical envelope. Since July 1, 2025, showing up without all required originals means you are not interviewed and must reschedule.
Step 4: Interview day: arrive on time, carry only documents
Leave every electronic device behind before you go: phones, smartwatches, tablets, and USB drives are banned and there is no storage at the consulate. Carry only a folder of documents. Aim to arrive about 30 minutes before 10:00 a.m., no earlier, then go through security screening and fingerprinting. You hand documents through a teller-style window and answer a short set of questions, mostly about how you met and your relationship. Most interviews are conducted in Mandarin; if you need Cantonese or another language, tell staff on arrival.
Step 5: After approval: collect the passport, then pay the USCIS fee
If approved, the consulate keeps your passport to print the visa and returns it the way you chose at registration: pick it up at your CITIC Bank branch with a photo ID, or wait for premium home delivery, usually within one to two weeks. Collect a CITIC pickup within 15 days or it goes back to the consulate. You also receive a sealed packet for U.S. immigration that you must not open. Pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee online before you travel, and enter the U.S. while both the visa and the medical exam are still valid.

Where to stay and getting there
- •Stay in or next to Zhujiang New Town in Tianhe District. It is Guangzhou's central business district, so it is full of hotels at every price point and puts you minutes from the consulate gate on interview morning.
- •Pick a hotel within a short walk or one metro stop of Zhujiang New Town station (Lines 3 and 5, Exit B1). Because you must leave all electronics behind and there is no storage on site, a close hotel lets you drop your phone in the room or hand it to a companion before you walk over.
- •Do not arrive more than 30 minutes early. The consulate has applicants wait outside in a line, so showing up at dawn for a 10:00 a.m. slot just means standing in the street longer.
- •Petitioners and attorneys cannot enter the waiting room, so a U.S.-citizen spouse who travels along should plan to wait at a nearby cafe and hold the phones rather than expecting to come inside.

Tips from the community
Sort out where your phone goes before you leave the hotel
Electronics are confiscated at security and the consulate has no lockers. Some private vendors near the gate offer paid bag-and-phone storage, but their security is not verified, so applicants who travel with a companion hand devices off outside, and solo applicants leave everything at a nearby Zhujiang New Town hotel. Decide the night before.

Expect the interview in Mandarin and prep short relationship answers
Most Guangzhou interviews are conducted in Mandarin, and applicants report being asked only a few basic questions, mainly how the couple met and details of the relationship. If you are more comfortable in Cantonese or another language, say so to staff when you arrive rather than waiting until you are at the window.

Choosing CITIC pickup is usually the fastest way to get the passport back
At registration you pick either a CITIC Bank branch for in-person pickup or premium delivery to your address. Applicants report the local CITIC branch pickup is typically the quicker option, and the branch holds the passport only 15 days before returning it to the consulate, so collect it promptly with a photo ID.

Book the medical the day you get your interview date
The result has to be in the consulate's system before your Tuesday slot, and Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center slots fill up, with only limited Saturday appointments. Applicants who call the moment they are scheduled avoid the scramble of doing the exam in the same week as the interview.

In their words
“Interview was on a Tuesday morning, only a handful of questions about how we met and our wedding. Approved at the window. Chose CITIC Bank pickup and had the passport with the visa in hand within about a week.”
“Do not bring your phone. There is nowhere to leave it inside and the guards will not hold it. My husband waited at a coffee shop nearby and kept both our phones while I went in.”

Frequently asked questions
Where is the immigrant visa interview held in China?
At the U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou, 43 Huajiu Road, Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe District, Guangzhou 510623. The entrance is on Huaxia Road near Exit B1 of the Zhujiang New Town metro station. It is the only U.S. post in mainland China that issues immigrant visas, so every CR1, IR1, and K-1 interview happens here no matter where in China you live.
What day and time are Guangzhou immigrant visa interviews?
Immigrant visa interviews are scheduled on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. The consulate asks you not to arrive more than 30 minutes before your appointment, because applicants wait outside in a line until they are let in for security screening.
When do I do the medical exam, and how much does it cost?
Book it as soon as you have your interview date, because the result must reach the consulate before your Tuesday slot, and you are not allowed to take the exam until an interview is scheduled. In southern China the panel physician is the Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center on Huali Road in Zhujiang New Town. The basic fee is RMB 1,700 for age 15 and above (RMB 1,500 for ages 2–14, RMB 700 under 2) as of May 2026, paid directly to the clinic, plus any vaccinations.
Can I bring my phone into the consulate?
No. Phones, smartwatches, tablets, USB drives, large bags, food, and liquids are prohibited, and there are no storage lockers at the consulate. Leave them at your hotel or with a companion outside, since petitioners and attorneys cannot enter the waiting room. Private vendors near the gate sometimes offer paid storage, but their security is not verified.
How and when do I get my passport back after approval?
The consulate keeps your passport, prints the visa, and returns it the way you chose when you registered online: pickup at a CITIC Bank branch (bring a photo ID) or premium delivery to your home address, usually within one to two weeks. A CITIC branch holds the passport for 15 days before sending it back to the consulate, so collect it promptly. You also receive a sealed packet for U.S. immigration that you must not open.
What happens if I show up without all my original documents?
Since July 1, 2025, applicants who arrive without all the required original documents are not interviewed that day and must reschedule, which can add months. China-issued civil documents must be notarized and translated into English by a local notary public office before the interview, so assemble every original in checklist order before you travel to Guangzhou.
Does my U.S.-citizen spouse need to come to the interview?
No. Petitioners are not required to attend, and because waiting-room space is limited, the consulate cannot accommodate petitioners or attorneys inside. A spouse who travels along should plan to wait nearby. Only people named on the appointment letter are allowed past security.
