Look for text that reads: Edition MM/DD/YY (for example, Edition 08/21/25 or Edition 09/15/26).
Never Mix Pages from Different Editions

Certain nonimmigrants, including F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, and foreign information-media representatives, have historically been authorized to stay in the United States for as long as they maintain their status. USCIS calls this system Duration of Status, or D/S, instead of a fixed end date printed on their paperwork.
The September 2026 revision to Form I-765 implements a new rule that replaces Duration of Status with a fixed period of admission for these categories. USCIS published the update alongside a new edition of Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status). The two forms cover related nonimmigrant categories.
This rule change targets F and J nonimmigrants and foreign information-media representatives specifically. It does not change who else needs Form I-765 or what the form asks of them.
What This Means If You're Filing Form I-765 for a Marriage Green Card
Marriage-based green card applicants use Form I-765 for a different reason than F and J nonimmigrants.
If you are adjusting status based on marriage to a U.S. citizen or green card holder, Form I-765 is how you apply for a work permit. USCIS calls this an Employment Authorization Document, or EAD. You can apply for one while your green card application is pending.
Most marriage-based applicants file it under category (c)(9), together with Form I-485. The filing fee is $260, since the EAD is no longer bundled free with the I-485 filing fee.
Most marriage-based applicants are not F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, or foreign information-media representatives, so the fixed period of admission rule itself rarely changes how they fill out Form I-765.
What applies to every applicant, regardless of category, is the edition date rule: USCIS accepts only the correct edition based on the postmark or e-filing date.

If you mailed your Form I-765 with the 08/21/25 edition before September 15, 2026, you are in the clear. As long as the package was postmarked before September 15, USCIS will accept it, even if it physically arrives at the lockbox after that date.
