USCIS moved to a new Form I-864 edition on August 31, 2026, with no grace period. Older editions are no longer accepted. Here is what every sponsor needs to know.

USCIS sometimes lets both an old and new edition run side by side for a while. Not this time.
The postmark date on your Affidavit of Support packet, or your e-file date, decides whether it is accepted. The rules since August 31, 2026:
- Postmarked before August 31, 2026: USCIS accepted the 10/17/24 edition.
- Postmarked on or after August 31, 2026: USCIS rejects the 10/17/24 edition and returns the entire packet.
- Right now, and going forward: USCIS only accepts the 08/24/26 edition.

Why the Edition Date Matters (And What a Rejection Looks Like)
Every USCIS form carries an edition date in the footer of each page. When your packet arrives at a USCIS lockbox facility, intake staff check the edition date before anyone reviews the underlying case.
An outdated edition gets rejected at that intake step. A rejection is not the same as a denial:
- No decision on the merits: USCIS never opens or evaluates the affidavit itself.
- No fee charged: Any filing fee tied to the packet goes uncashed or uncharged.
- The whole packet comes back: USCIS mails the entire bundle back with a notice explaining the edition was outdated.
A rejection still costs time. It can delay the underlying marriage green card case by weeks while the sponsor reprints, re-signs, and resends the Affidavit of Support.
What Changed: A New Credit Report Authorization
The 08/24/26 edition adds a privacy release: it authorizes USCIS to request the sponsor's information from consumer reporting agencies, the companies that compile credit reports. USCIS can now use one when reviewing the affidavit.
- A credit freeze can get in the way. A freeze (also called a security freeze) on the sponsor's file can block a reporting agency from releasing that report.
- Millions of people already have one. Most freezes follow a data breach notice, and USCIS guidance warns an active freeze can block it from retrieving the sponsor's information until lifted.
- Companion forms moved too. Form I-864A (the household-member income contract) and the shorter Form I-864EZ carry the same update.

If a packet went out on or after August 31, 2026 with the older edition, USCIS rejects it and mails it back unadjudicated. The sponsor needs to redo the affidavit on the 08/24/26 edition and resend it, along with any companion forms in the packet.
